After considering alternatives, I decided on no face at all. I also solved the top heavy problem, so I removed the gas tank. I ordered these feathers from Singapore through eBay. They were advertised as ostrich feathers, but I’ve never seen an ostrich with these colourings. I assume they are died, or phoney, or both. I could have ordered any colour feather, but I made them match the happy face beach ball skin to pose a question. Why does the colour of the bird’s skin have any bearing on the colours of its feathers? Considering colour is a lived experience originating in the eye, why would they have any relationship of this type? This coherent/incoherent oscillation is part of the internal logic and expression of a mascot. It doesn’t matter what colours it is, as long as they are different than the competition. And as long as we are focused on what its selling us, we don’t question what a mascot looks like. Ultimately, the mascot is a distraction or diversion tactic. This gives the mascot a sinister quality of exploitation and torture, despite its happy face skin and bright pop colours. This element brought to mind the infamous Hooded Man photograph taken in 2003 by Sergeant Ivan Frederick of Abdou Hussain Saad Faleh, a prisoner subjected to torture and abuse in Abu Ghraib prison. The circulation, aesthetisization, and commodification of this image is also part of the internal logic of a mascot. The mascot is singled out, trotted out, and tortured with attention. Never Falling Forever 2002-2003 / wood, mannequin, clothing / 19 feet tall In the middle of my BFA, I submitted this sculpture for the annual Outdoor Sculpture Project competition. I wanted to address the inherent social tensions of the courtyard, so I used the ‘trust game’ where you fall backwards into the arms of a friend. I had originally considered using two figures where one falls into the other’s arms, but placing the falling figure on the university building roof and catching figure on the ground in the courtyard. I dressed the figure in my own clothing, but I do not consider it a self-portrait. Using my own clothes seemed like the only appropriate choice, since fashion is an arbitrary personal choice. It also has a brown haired wig and a hat to help hold it down, where as I have blond hair and rarely wore hats. Since it had to last a year outdoors, I sprayed the clothing with so much weather protection that it set into position. The tree he is standing on was taken from the yard of one of my professors. On a whim, I went to the store and asked if they had any old mannequins to donate or sell. I was lead into a maze-like backroom with hundreds of mannequins in different states of repair. They let me take two for $20, a child and adult mannequin. I had friends in other provinces. At least for me, online space had contracted the depth of physical space without flattening it’s substance. I felt connected in a way that was not inferior or superior to real life. I didn’t really want the camera, but I really wanted the roll of film. I justified the theft by telling myself that no one will know the roll is missing because the roll isn’t really being sold in this context. I told myself, “I could be the only one alive who knows this roll exists”. I am amazed by the journey this roll went on to get to me. I accidentally completed a complete stranger’s roll of film, like a disposable camera at a party but I showed up way too late. I cannot recall how I organized them or the categories written on the labels, but the photos documented a large outdoor family picnic. This is the graduate exhibition in Rogue Annex Gallery. I did not make these plinths and hated them, but they did the job I guess. I didn’t include the 3rd box because it was too long and awkward for any of the available plinths. This photo was found on the refrigerator of a friend and depicts a mutual friend holding a shotgun in his backyard in 1995. This gun belonged to his father and grandfather before him who were also police officers. This mutual friend went on to become a police officer as well. To make this detail legible, I printed this collage at 4 x 6 feet, which made this inserted photo just under 3 x 5 inches. Christmas time for me was always filled with anxiety. Like the image of the pigs, this picture had to be printed at a large enough size to make the smaller inserted photographs legible. The found photo is of the child staring out the window of a ferry boat. He is now gazing into a living room scene where two males are passed out, seemingly from drinking. I took this voyeuristic photograph in the early morning hours, drawn to the window while on LSD. It combines two photographs of the same child in different scenarios; in one he jumps into a pool, in the other he soaks his head under a water pump in a desert island themed park with a sunken ship. I joined them by connecting the edge of the pool with the edge of the park’s sand fill, as if the pool and the park were sharing the same space. Just as Medusa is subjected to the cold discretion of Perseus, the statues of art history are often subjected to the cold indifference of the tourist. Typically, DIY APC’s would be housed in either a simple neutral casing like Tupperware or in something totally incongruous like a baby doll head. My intention was to house the APC in a casing that was more suited to the noises that it makes. I improvised the sounds while I went, and later added Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Op. 45/iii composition to the mix. I chose this piece of music because of Rachmaninoff's influence on later minimalist music. The Atari Punk Console inside the Spacemower has very limited playability, where you can only go up and down note scales, much like a Rachmaninoff composition. I was pleased with the occasional synchronicity between my live improvisation and the dubbed in classical music. Considering the shitty video quality and chaotic noise made by the Spacemower, I also appreciate how the Rachmaninoff makes the viewing experience a little more palatable and dramatic. I improvised the sounds while I went, and later added Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Op. 45/iii composition to the mix. I chose this piece of music because of Rachmaninoff's influence on later minimalist music. The Atari Punk Console inside the Spacemower has very limited playability, where you can only go up and down note scales, much like a Rachmaninoff composition. I was pleased with the occasional synchronicity between my live improvisation and the dubbed in classical music. Considering the shitty video quality and chaotic noise made by the Spacemower, I also appreciate how the Rachmaninoff makes the viewing experience a little more palatable and dramatic. Bots is a large pile of 10 life-size featureless red velvet ragdolls inspired by crowd conflict simulation software and body pillows. The title refers to social bots which are sophisticated internet applications that run automated tasks that mimic human behavior like chatting, posting, and myriad other ways to manipulate information online. Ten of these bots are in a dogpile, both a physical act and a social media phenomenon where a crowd focuses derision at a single person. This often involves deploying hoards of bots that artificially inflate the level of interest in the event. My figures embody this distorting effect of social media in its soft smooth surface that is inviting, stimulating, and comforting yet superficially connects us to others that could be lifeless silicon-based programs.
